Workshop Description:
 The two day Alert Program
Ô course emphasizes practical ways for teachers, parents, and therapists to implement the program in school, home, and clinic settings.  Participants learn novel methods to share the basic theory of the Alert Program Ô ( and sensory processing theory) with other team members, so all can support students in developing self-regulation awareness.  Through the speakers’ unique teaching style, participants are supported to be alert and attentive throughout the two days, consequently, learning is fun and engines are energized.  After the conference, participants return to their work settings with their own plan of how to adapt the Alert Program Ô for their students.

 Objectives:
The participants will be able to:
1.  Implement the Alert Program
Ô in clinic, school, or home settings with an individual client or with groups of clients.
2.  Interpret their own sensorimotor preferences thereby improving their ability to facilitate client’s self-regulation and attention.
3.  Utilize new therapeutic/educational activity ideas for home, school, and therapy settings.
4..  Apply novel methods to educate other about the basics of sensory integration and underlying theory of the Alert Program
Ô.

Faculty:Sherry Shellenberger and Mary Sue Williams are occupational therapists who have a joint vision to enhance the school experience of children. They believe, and inspire others to believe, that positive change can happen with the help of all educational team members (including parents) working together.

Mary Sue and Sherry have over 25 years of experience working with and learning from a variety of children, parents, and teachers in urban and rural school districts as well as clinic, home, and camp settings. They have focused on developing practical ways to teach people of all ages how to incorporate sensory integration theory into every day living. For the past two decades, they have developed, refined, and kid-tested the Alert Program
Ô. One of the authors' greatest joys is watching children find the answers to the question, "How Does Your Engine Run?â"

As co-owners of TherapyWorks, Inc., Mary Sue and Sherry have published numerous products relating to self-regulation. Since 1991, thousands of professionals have attended Alert Program
Ô trainings with enthusiastic reviews. In 1996, the authors decided to lecture full-time to spread the word about using the engine analogy and how understanding self-regulation can enrich the lives of children. Since children are their finest teachers, Sherry and Mary Sue now enjoy volunteering time in the Albuquerque Schools and community where they look forward to learning more from their excellent student "instructors.”
